software=computer instructions or program or application or data.
systems software=software on a computer that is designed to control and work with computer hardware.
operating system=a software platform to run other programs and applications, perform basic tasks on hardware or peripheral devices.
utilities=a computer system software intended to analyze, configure, monitor, or help maintain a computer.
device driver=A program that controls a device. a driver, a device driver or hardware driver is a group of files that enable one or more hardware devices to communicate with the computer's operating system.
firmware=Software (programs or data) that has been written onto read-only memory (ROM).

abandonware=abandon warez, abandonware is software no longer developed, sold, or supported by the creator.
add-on=add in is any third-party software program or script that is added to a program to give it additional features and abilities. Related to add in, browser extension, plugin.
adware=a program installed without a user's consent or knowledge during the install of another program.
alpha version software=A very early version of a software product that may not contain all of the features that are planned for the final version. Alpha release software.

bootleg=an illegal copy of software that was not purchased from the developer or retail store.
bundled software=bundle ware and pre-installed software, bundled software is any software that is included with a new computer, hardware, or other software program.

censorware=a software that is also referred to as Internet blocking or Internet filtering or other filtering software.
charityware=software where the software author encourages its users to donate a payment to a charity or other good cause. Related to careware, donationware.
collaboration=a process in which two or more people or groups of people work together to achieve a common goal, such as completing an application, raising money, or finishing an artistic project or technical project. Related to groupware.
commercial software=Any software that must be purchased to be used. Related to shareware, freeware.
crapware=software that comes pre-installed with OEM computers and offers no advantage because it's a trial or expires after a few days. a label often given to a software program or operating system that is included with new computers; these discs are only available from the manufacturer and consequently, not available for resale.
crippleware=Software program or utility that does not have all features enabled or has limited capabilities until the user registers the program and receives a code to unlock the program. Related to shareware.
data dump=the transfer of a large amount of data between two systems, often over a network connection.
database=a databank or a datastore, and sometimes abbreviated as a DB, a database is a large quantity of indexed digital information. It can be searched, referenced, compared, changed or otherwise manipulated with optimal speed and minimal processing expense.
demo/demoware=A software file that enables a user the ability to try a service, software program, software game, or software utility before purchasing it or signing up.
desktop publishing=the use of a computer to produce high-quality documents containing text and graphics formatted for a publication.
Device relationship management=a type of software that enables the monitoring, managing, maintaining, and servicing of devices over the Internet.

document=document file is a description of an electronic copy or hard copy of reference material for a product. When referring to a file extension, a document is a readable file.
donationware=a licensing model that supplies fully operational unrestricted software to the user and requests an optional donation be paid to the programmer or a third-party beneficiary (usually a non-profit). Related to careware, charityware, helpware.
dribbleware=a software that has been released without proper testing, characterized by frequent updates, fixes, and patches. Related to alpha version software.
drm (digital rights management)=a technology designed to help protect copyrighted material from being used, read, or shared without the proper rights.
edutainment software=any software that is designed to entertain as well as help educate.
embedded=In general, embedded or an embedded system is a term used to describe an object, software, or hardware that is independent and does not need an external program or device to run it. When referring to HTML, the <embed> tag is used to designate an area for interactive content (plug-in) or an external application.
emulator=hardware or software that allows a computer or other device to act as if it were something else.

extension=a part that is added to something that extends or enlarges it. For example, in the case of computer cables an extension cable or extension cord is a cord capable of being connected into another cord that extends its overall length.
file extension=the ending of a file that helps identify the type of file.
file transfer=the process of moving data from one location to another.
file=an object on a computer that stores data, information, settings, or commands used with a computer program.
fix=hot fix, patch, resolution, update, workaround.
foistware=any additional software that is installed that doesn't relate to the program the user is installing. Relate to crapware
free software foundation=a non-profit organization that promotes the freedom to study, distribute, create, and modify computer software. Relate to open source
freeware=free software is copyrighted software, which means that you cannot do anything with it that is not expressly allowed by the author. Usually, the author allows people to use the software, but not sell it. Related to given away software.
freeware=software that is made available 100% free as long as it remains un-modified. The complete opposite of freeware is commercial software. Unlike open-source software, freeware cannot be modified and is often only licensed to be used by non-commercial users.
game software= a video game, a game is software code that has been designed to entertain or educate an individual. edutainment software.
generative design=an approach to the design process that employs an algorithm or set of rules normally used by a computer program to generate the end-product.
geocaching software=computer software used in the hobby of geocaching. Geocache information is generally stored in the GPX file format, and most geocaching software works with these files directly.
given away software=not a trial software, not a limited version software but a registered and legal version of the software is completely free.
GNU (pronounced g'noo)=GNU's not Unix, is a free software project to provide a distributable replacement for Unix.

groupware=Software program that allows a group of individuals on a network to use the same software or work on the same project at the same time.

liveware=people using (attached to) computers, and is based on the need for a human, or liveware, to operate the system using hardware and software. Similar to wetware, meatware and jellyware.
malware=scumware, malware is malicious software designed to change your settings, delete software, cause errors, watch browsing habits, or open computer to attacks.
nagware=software that routinely issues a pop-up window or other form of visual interface asking the user to register a product, purchase an application or take another form of action.
netware=a software product that runs on a variety of different types of LANs, from Ethernets to IBM token-ring networks.
office software=a software suite that widely used in business and educational environments to create, view, and edit any documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.
open source software=OSS is a software source code that is freely distributed to help develop the software or allow for customization with the software.
operating system-based program=software that is designed to work on a computer running some kind operating system.
optimization=optimization, program optimization or software optimization is when the underlying code of a software system is altered so that the program runs more efficiently.

platform=a description of the overall standard of a computer's hardware or software.
policeware=software that is secretly installed on a suspects computer that allows government and other law enforcements to monitor computer use.
postcardware=software that encourages or requires users satisfied with this software to send a postcard to the author.
preprocessor=a hardware device or software program that processes information heading towards the computer processor before it gets to the processor.
presentation program=a software program that helps create a slideshow that addresses a topic.
program=application, software application or software program is the most common software on the computer that performs a special function or task.
public domain software=software can be freely distributed and used, because a company has released it as so or because it's out business.
ransomware=a malicious program that infects a computer and then locks some part of it, preventing the user access to their computer or data.
remote control software=a program that enables a user at a local computer to control a remote computer via modem, network card, or some other network adapter.
Rolling release=rolling update, is a model of software development in which improvements to the software are made in continuous, incremental steps rather than in discrete version releases.

SaaS=Software as a Service, SaaS is software that is provided as a service instead of a product. Users access the software program and instead of paying a single payment for the program pays a monthly service fee or pays by the total time the software is used.

serial file=a type of file that contains information, which is recorded in the file in the order it occurred. It can also contain files, in which case the files information would be listed in the order they were saved in the serial file. The information or files are essentially recorded in chronological order. New information is appended, or recorded, at the end of the serial file only. There are also no subsets or directories of information within the file.
shareware=software that allows a user to try all or part of the program for free before buying it. Relate to demoware or trial software.
shovelware=a derogatory term for software (or a collection of software) that is noted for its quantity, rather than its quality or usefulness.
side grade=a computer software product that closely resembles another product from the same company.
slimeware=software that interferes with the user experience by changing key settings in order to gain profit. For example, slimeware may change your Internet browser default home page to one where you view a company's banner ad or products for sale. Related to spyware, adware.

software license=an agreement between a user and a software company that allows that individual to use the program. Typically before installing or using a software you must agree to the license agreement.

software versioning=a way to categorize the unique states of computer software as it is developed and released.

update=a software file that contains fixes for problems found by other users or the software developer. Process of running an update on the computer that installs the latest up-to-date code and fixes.
upgrada=software upgrade generally refers to any major upgrade to the software that adds significant or completely new changes to the program.
utility=computer system software intended to analyze, configure, monitor, or help maintain a computer.
vaporware=software that has been officially announced by a company, but has not officially been released.
vector graphics editor=A computer program that allows users to create, manipulate, and save vector graphics images in an interactive environment is known as a vector graphics editor.

word processor=WP, a word processor is a software program capable of creating, storing, and printing typed documents.
workspace=In software development, a grouping of source code files that make up a larger unit, like a web page, website, or software program. The workspace can be a file or directory.
